Canisters are required in at least one Georgia stretch and could be required for backpacking in other areas as black-bear incursions increase.  These canisters are Forest Service-recommended for Appalachian Trail backpacking.

The small canister (BV450) weighs 2 pounds, 1 ounce, before adding 4 days of food.
